How To Refresh Your Bathroom On A Budget

One of the most fun things about owning a home is getting to make it truly  and uniquely yours! No worries about a landlord taking money from your deposit for painting a wall, no worries about updating someone else’s asset at your cost, and no second thoughts about permission or whether or not this is a good idea since its only temporary! This really is one of the most exciting parts of homeownership!

We bought our 1960’s built house six months after our wedding and watched our bank account drain commas overnight! We had so many dreams of what our space could be to fit right in with our lifestyle and personalities, but we were “house poor” so we had no choice but to live with the neon lime green walls, rail-less staircase, and a few other funky features. Much more quickly than anticipated, we got the hang of our monthly payment and slowly but surely started to rebuild our savings!

*Side note: we know the feeling all too well of emptying your savings to buy a house and how scary that can feel. Every single homebuyer we have ever worked with has felt the exact same way. But take is from us having gone through this with hundreds of hopeful homeowners, that scary feeling goes away within a few weeks and you are right back on track financially, trust us!

ANYWAY! Back to the bathroom refresh! As the savings grew and we got in to the groove of homeownership, it was time to start making this house OUR home. Over the years, we have completed some small projects that pack a big impact and have watched our dream home unfold. While we have not done any major remodeling (the kitchen is next on the list), we have done some REFRESHING throughout and the half bathroom is my personal favorite: the budget was low, it was done with sweat equity by someone who had no idea what they were doing (me) and it turned out better than I could have ever imagined!

It started out looking like this: basic, livable, but just didn’t have that homey feeling that I strive for –

With just a few simple switch-a-roos, I am obsessed with this bathroom now and so proud of my mini update. It encompasses my style and personality and is one more step in the transformation to our dream home!

First up, we painted the walls! They went from Wise Owl to my current favorite interior wall color: Benjamin Moore Seapearl which is an off-white with gray undertones. Cabinets and trims are always Kelly-Moore Swiss Coffee. I am a fan of light and bright with some versatility; these paint colors are a perfect complement and go with everything!

Next, I switched out the lighting fixture, mirror, and cabinet hardware.

This lighting fixture is so fun and so bright! Each crystal had to be strung by hand, that part was reeeeeally fun, but worth it for the high quality/low price!

What I love about this mirror is the combination of squared and rounded edges! I carried that throughout the entire space and really appreciate the flexibility it gave me with the variety of elements.

I have loved any and every thing that I have purchased from Ravinte. When it comes to cabinet and door hardware, their pulls, handles, knobs, etc. are extremely high quality and come in so many different finishes!

You can see here how I continued to incorporate squared elements with round ones and how great they look together. I used the matte black finish for a pop and to match the mirror!

To put the finishing touches on the space, I repurposed some floating shelves we had laying around (originally from Hobby Lobby) and decorated them with some functional bathroom accessories we already had.  -Clean hand towels, rolled for individual use (my favorite guest bathroom hack, hand towels are 83cents each and so much more sanitary!) -A live plant to enhance the organic modern aesthetic & a pretty watering can for dramatic effect, of course!  -A yummy candle, because…you know, its a bathroom 😉

And with just a few budget friendly, simple upgrades, HERE SHE IS!!!

We hope you enjoy a glimpse in to our favorite parts of homeownership and look forward to sharing more of our refresh projects with you! To follow along in live time, we hope to see you over on Instagram!

Happy Refreshing!
